$100,000 To Promote Your App On MySpace
Nick O’Neil’s Social Times just ran a story about MySpace’s new paid plan for their application directory. Similar to the way MySpace lets entertainment companies take over their front page for movie promotions, MySpace will let young applications pay for promotion in their application directory. Apparently Slide is the first one to bite. And it appears they bit hard. O’Neil states that “My sources have been pitched to at between $50,000 and $100,000 for one week as a featured application on the MySpace applications page.”
O’Neil points out that this leaves smaller developers out in the dark. That may be the case now, but I’m sure MySpace will see the value of opening viral channels to spur organic growth of valuable applications. Platforms are marketplaces and to support a thriving marketplace, MySpace needs to ensure that developers can turn a profit. We’re still early on in the evolution of the platform.
