All I ask is that "industry leaders" make it a point to listen to the audience members they are trying to target. The biggest complaint people have against Facebook is that they are avid users and still their requests of how to format the Site go ignored. Biggest example is when the format of the entire Web site changed and the communication Web site became one that was used as a way to vent about how much the new format was disliked.

It is the same principle for advertisers and corporations looking to social media for advertising success. If you crunch the numbers and see that ad "A" increased revenue by x percent when it was placed on Facebook...great! But listen to those on Facebook, or Twitter. It could be a fluke that ad "A" had no correlation with sales success and the facts are skewed. The best research you can get is first hand opinion. The fact of the matter is, too many people who come from a different, and older, generation are trying to control this market when most are not even users of these media.

Listen to what the social media generation wants. Reference "25 Things I Hate About Facebook" by Julian Smith. It is posted on this same site and he goes as far as saying he wants to put a piece of duct tape on the right side of his computer screen to block all the annoying ads that include things such as personals ads and "hot christian singles." Julian is not the only one to feel this way. If market researchers look beyond the numbers, and get in touch with PEOPLE and what they have to say, advertisers and the social media Sites themselves, will all benefit 10 fold.

I have a job interview this week at an ad agency and one thing they asked was that I demonstrate my knowledge of social media and online media. I have a lot of experience online through twitter, facebook, blogging, etc.
