Weezer On SocialMedia

pork and beansI’m happy to say, as a big fan, that Weezer is running a promotion across SocialMedia’s ad network. It’s not only interesting because Weezer’s viral music video harnessed social media meme’s, but because it exemplifies a new model of targeting, called Appographics (more info). Here’s a white paper on appographics for the technically inclined too.

Appographics is a technology that lets advertisers target their audience based on where they hang out. So now, when you’re using a music focused application, you can be shown music focused advertisements. Not only does this mean that advertisers can reach an audience whose mind is turned towards music, but now smaller applications in our network can gain access to higher value ad inventory. In the long run, this can make previously less profitable verticals economically valuable.

As these campaigns come through, Social Media developers should see their eCPMs get a boost (there have been some less exciting campaigns already).

And now, Weezer…
